PhD “Life Cycle”:
The course of a doctorate in the IMPRS MolPlant

Research is a the core of a doctorate at the MPI of Molecular Plant Physiology and in the IMPRS MolPlant.

All learning activities within the IMPRS MolPlant should benefit the scientific and personal development of our doctoral researchers. Most learning elements in the IMPRS are based on voluntary participation.

Presentations in the institute-wide Progress Seminar, written reports and meetings with the PhD Advisory Committee (PAC) provide annual check-points for the progress and work plan of the doctoral project.

Mandatory elements of the IMPRS MolPlant doctoral programme

  • Presentation of the doctoral project in a yearly seminar, at least three times during the doctorate (the MPI-MP Progress seminar for all doctoral researchers at MPI-MP).
  • Written progress reports at the end for the first and second year.
  • Meetings with the PAC at the end of the first, second and third year.
  • Attendance of a Good Scientific Practice course.
  • Teaching experience, as stipulated by the regulations of UP Faculty of Science.

The IMPRS coordinator monitors whether doctoral researchers fulfil the first four elements. She organizes the Progress seminar and sends reminders for written reports and PAC meetings.

The timely organization of teaching experience is the responsibility of the doctoral researcher. Teaching experience is to be gained in courses or seminars of the BSc and MSc study courses at UP Faculty of Science. The total teaching experience that must be shown when the doctoral thesis is submitted amounts to approximately 25 hours.

Doctoral candidacy & University procedures

The IMPRS MolPlant is a doctoral programme in partnership with the University of Potsdam and their Faculty of Science.

Most IMPRS MolPlant PhD researchers are registered as doctoral candidates with the Faculty of Science at the University of Potsdam. The doctoral thesis is submitted to the UP Faculty of Science and examined according to their Regulations for Doctoral Degree Studies. The website of the UP Faculty of Science Doctoral Office gives detailed information on all procedures for a doctorate at UP Faculty of Science.

An overview of the process of REGISTRATION as doctoral candidate is given at > PhD @ University of Potsdam. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the PhD programme coordinator at MPI-MP for advice and guidance on procedures and formal aspects.
