Project description

The merger of multiple genomes in a common nucleus, a phenomenon called allopolyploidization, played a key role in plant evolution and crop domestication. The combination of multiple chromosome sets also leads to the development of novel traits, allowing the new polyploid to rapidly diversify and invade niches that were not previously accessible. Recently, grafting-mediated horizontal genome transfer was discovered as a mechanism leading to the generation of new allopolyploids. It bypasses sexual boundaries between species and can be used as a method to experimentally produce new allopolyploid species. By combining the genomes of Nicotiana tabacum and Nicotiana glauca, a new fertile species (Nicotiana tabauca), exhibiting greater vigor than its diploid progenitors, was obtained. We now apply grafting-mediated genome transfer in the Solanaceae family towards generating new allopolyploids.
