In nature and in the field, plants often face multiple abiotic stresses at the same time. We have been studying the effects of salinity and high light stress, alone and in combination, in durum wheat plants, using transcript and metabolite analyses. Our results indicate that these stresses in combination lead to fine-tuning of specific metabolites, in particular, GABA, amides, minor amino acids, hexoses and proline. These metabolic changes are associated with osmotic adjustment, pH-homeostasis, assimilation of the excess of ammonium, scavenging of ROS and signalling.
