A central challenge in
microbiome research is determining which members of a microbial community
influence host health. Dozens of species of the bacterial genus Pseudomonas colonize
plants. While some strains act as biocontrol agents suppressing the growth of
pathogens, others are potent disease agents. I study the mechanisms by which
different strains of Pseudomonas affect Arabidopsis thaliana
growth and health. My research combines microbiome analysis, association
mapping, genetic analysis and recently metabolomics to determine the genes that
influence interactions between host and microbe. Finally, I incorporate these findings within an
evolutionary context to understand, and ultimately predict, the dynamics of
pathogen outbreak.
