Nitrate, beside its role as essential nutrient, acts as a signal molecule for triggering many responses to changes in N availability. Several molecular players involved in the regulation by nitrate have been identified recently, but the nitrate signaling pathway from nitrate perception to the regulation of gene expression has not been completely described so far. Among the transcription factors governing the early nitrate response, NIN-like protein 7 (NLP7) plays a key role in early nitrate signaling, orchestrating the expression of dozens of key genes involved in nitrate signaling and metabolism. I will summarizes the current understanding of the NLP-dependent nitrate signaling pathway and beyond.
