How do plants optimize photosynthetic light-harvesting under various light conditions?

Abstract:

Photosynthesis powers nearly all life on Earth. The absorption of sunlight by pigments in photosystems drives photosynthesis. Land plants are exposed to strongly fluctuating light conditions. Not only the light intensity, but also the light spectrum can rapidly change during the day. As plants are sessile they cannot run away from unfavourable light conditions. Instead they have to optimize their photosynthetic light-harvesting machinery and make the best of it. In this talk I will show how various techniques, such as confocal microscopy and time-resolved fluorescence can be used to reveal how plants adapt their thylakoid membrane when illuminated with different light conditions.
