Summary
Plants do not only produce oxygen, they also use it as a substrate for respiratory energy production. However, the oxygen concentration within plant tissues can drop to very low levels (hypoxia), because plants lack any active distribution system for oxygen. During recent years, much new knowledge has become available about how plant metabolism adapts to the regularly occurring hypoxic conditions within a plant and how oxygen concentrations in plants are being sensed.
