Too hot to handle: The genetics and physiology behind pollen thermo(in)tolerance.

High temperature negatively affects growth and fertility of plants. Thus, the increase in global temperatures pose a severe risk to human food security and a better understanding of the underlying problems is urgently needed. I will show that production of pollen is a major limiting factor for fertility of tomato under heat-wave-like temperature profiles. I will present data on the cytological, molecular and physiological effects of high temperature that may explain the observed phenotype and on the genetic architecture of reproductive thermotolerance. Some of these results can readily be used in crop improvement programs.
