Group "Storage Carbohydrate Metabolism"
New position: Chair of Plant Metabolism, Ludwigs-Maximilian-University, Munich

Plants have the ability to use light energy to convert inorganic carbon dioxide to organic sugars which are used for storage and growth. Starch and lipids are major storage products with many important functions in plants and great economical importance in human nutrition and as a renewable feedstock for industrial products and bio-fuel. An important aim of my research is to understand major signals that regulate storage metabolism in plants in response to environmental factors and physiological inputs and to assess biotechnological applications to improve crops such as potato, rice and oil-seed rape. To achieve this, I am using a combination of systems biology and hypothesis driven approaches and put a strong focus on an integrated analysis of plant metabolism at a subcellular level.
